FETISH INSTRUMENTS ABANDONED
IFIRA
This town known as Ifira at the time of Apostle Babalola was a small town divided into six different communities. The C.M.S church was well established there but despite this they did not abandon Idolatry. Every one of these six communities had their demonically possessed masquerade. Each of the communities had their own type of drum. It was forbidding for one community to beat its drum in the manner of that of another community. It was a community that was invested with powerful demonic deities that manifested wicked attributes.
For example one of the deities masquerade known as Egule that belong to one of the community called Isowo is so diabolic to the extent that after putting on its costume, it was forbidding that any one should point a finger at it. Anyone who did that would either die or lose his hand that was used to point at him. The shrine of this deity was located on a hill where a very large snake coils around the large pot in which all the fetish instruments of the deity are kept.
Every year, a live quail was usually used as sacrifice to appease the deity while the chief priest slaughters a he goat or a sheep to placate the large snake. Any year that they were unable to find a live quail for this deity, they will have to substitute with a human being. This was how wicked the deity was. We know how difficult it is to capture a quail alive. Hunters that miss their way into this forest and come across the snake often encounter misfortune. If they shoot their gun to kill it, the bullet will not get to it.
When Apostle Babalola got to this town, he decided to go to the shrine to put an end to the dominion of the deity but the Oba of Ifira advised against such a decision because he was afraid that such a move will not yield result and it could endanger the life of this man of God. When Apostle Babalola persisted, the Oba appointed some men to come and represent him in the exercise. He sent one of his brothers by name Daniel and one B. Solomon a court clerk, policemen and many others. They all came to see if Apostle Babalola would be able to accomplish this divine assignment.
When Babalola proceeded to the hill where the shrine was located, everybody in the community abandoned their homes and fled. When the man of God reached the shrine, as he shook the hand bell in his hand the pot in which the voodoo instruments of the shrine was kept brake... All the charms were confisticated and as shout of hallelujah rend the air people trooped to the hill top to see what God had done and in the stampede that followed, the people stepped on the large snake without knowing and it was killed. The power of God suppressed the demonic power that has been using it against the town and the snake that they dare not confront was stepped upon with their bare feet and it died. There are other deities apart from the Egule. Others are Aponmo efon, Owara, Uko, Ere-ela, Arira; they were all destroyed by the power in the blood of Jesus. Many of their traditions that were oppressive were abandoned and the town started to enjoy the liberty in Christ.
As it was obvious that victory had been wrought, people that fled their homes returned and many people brought out their fetish instruments to be destroyed. It took three months to destroy the entire fetish instrument that was brought forward including that of the Oba. The church did not grow at this time because of persecution but the Oba supported the gospel.
After two years one Phillip Bamigbade started the revival again on the tenth of August 1934 and those that accepted the revival stood their ground that they were going to continue to be members of the new church and the Oba supported them.
By November thirteen 1934, Babalola revisited Ifira and this time around he conducted for them harvest service and demanded for land upon which they could build a church. To this the Oba was happy to allocate to them the land they requested for. The church was built in that year to the glory of God.
